Pataskala Ohio

Pataskala is a community working to balance its rural heritage with its desirability as a growing bedroom community, located minutes from major employers, shopping and entertainment options in Columbus.

The city is in a prime location, just north of Interstate 70, south of Ohio 161, with Ohio 16 splitting the city. The 2007 census indicated 12,649 people lived in the city, but officials think that number now is closer to 17,000. The city is developing a 400-acre industrial park that will offer a new north-south road in 2010.

The first settler moved to the area in 1805. The village, founded in 1851, takes its name from “pataskala,” a Native American word meaning “licking.”

Pataskala was incorporated as a village in 1891 and stayed that way until the mid-1990s. The village merged with neighboring Lima Township on Jan. 1, 1996, creating a city of almost 40 square miles.

The city houses parts of two growing school districts, Licking Heights Local Schools and Southwest Licking Local Schools. Major employers include the two school districts, Contract Lumber Inc., Ohio Steel Industries Inc., Mulch Manufacturing, 84 Lumber Co., AEP, Sprint-Embarq and Kroger.

A number of festive events lure people to Pataskala each year. Those events include the Pataskala Antique Power Show, the Pataskala Street Fair, The Pataskala Farmers Market and the Pataskala Lighted Christmas Parade.
