Newark Ohio
Newark, the county seat of Licking County with a population of 47,176 in 2007, celebrated its bicentennial in 2002. It is the governmental center for the state’s second-largest county in square mileage. Its major employers are in manufacturing. The town was founded in 1802 by Maj. William C. Schenck, who came from Newark, N.J., and created The Square, the town’s center that is surrounded by broad streets.
Newark was incorporated as a town in 1826 and became a city in 1860. Newark High School opened in 1838 and today has an enrollment of around 1,600 at its campus-style location, 314 Granville St., and at Career and Technology Education Centers of Licking County, 150 Price Road.
Major employers include Owens Corning, State Farm Insurance, Holophane, Newark City Schools, Licking Memorial Hospital, Park National Corp., The Longaberger Co., Newark campus of Ohio State University, Central Ohio Technical College, Licking County government and Newark city government.
Major attractions include the The Midland Theatre, Heisey Glass Museum, Longaberger’s basket-shaped corporate headquarters, Don Edwards Park, Newark Earthworks, Octagon Mounds and CoCo Key Water Resort at Cherry Valley Lodge.
